Gibbs Hill Lighthouse, one of the oldest cast iron lighthouses in the world, stands 245ft above sea level. At a height of 177ft it provides visitors with a panoramic view of the whole island, if you are willing to climb the 185 steps to reach the top.
As you ascend there are eight floors where you can catch your breath and enjoy the exhibits which illustrate the history of the lighthouse.
Adjacent to the lighthouse a gift shop and restaurant occupy the former lighthouse keeper's cottages.
I hate heights, but the views from the top are too good to miss.
Back on Terra Firma, it's time to take a cue from the wildlife and find somewhere shady to cool off.
This looks like just the place!
